3PM Interview with Filip Van Bourgognie

Name : Filip Van Bourgognie - Position : Practice Leader Project, Program and Portfolio Management (3PM) - Altran Solution: Project, Program and Portfolio Management (3PM) - Industry: Utilities

Context of Filip's favourite project:

In what was probably my favourite project, I worked on the design and construction of an Energy Management Dispatching control room, full SCADA and data historian facilities, the monitoring and control of power stations throughout Germany, and installation of administrative, operational and data communications systems with the grid operator.

Filip's Project Challenges:

The main challenge of this project was to deliver within a strict timeframe. If the milestones were not kept, the European Commission was going to penalise our client severely. A project that would usually take at least a year to deliver had to be delivered in less than 6 months, with multiple stakeholders and several unspecified business requirements at play.

Filip's Project Solution:

We applied strict scope control to make sure all available resources were assigned to the delivery of the essential items required in the functionalities that needed to be in place before the mandatory go-live date.  All non-essential scope items were listed to be taken up in a follow-up project (Phase 2) to start after the first project had been fully delivered.

Filip's Project Results:

The project successfully delivered the essential scope items, allowing the Energy Dispatching services of the client to go live within the set timeframe. Furthermore, the project was delivered within budget.

It’s the project leader’s role to understand what that is and to take that into account in the interaction and communication within the project.
